A Torturous Compromise by Thomas Friedman
Thomas Freidman, New York Times columnist and the sine qua non of maximum gravitas, patiently explains why there can be no investigations or prosecutions. Two reasons: “the first is that because justice taken to its logical end here would likely require bringing George W. Bush, Donald Rumsfeld and other senior officials to trial, which would rip our country apart; and the other is that Al Qaeda truly was a unique enemy, and the post-9/11 era a deeply confounding war in a variety of ways.”
We must after all, protect our “open society” by suppressing the facts about torture and absolutely preventing any prosecutions because that would “rip our country apart”. Trust, “the very feature that keeps our society open” would be lost if Americans knew what their highest officials have been doing in their name .
It’s not pretty folks but hey, reality isn’t pretty.” So, yes, people among us who went over the line may go unpunished, because we still have enemies who respect no lines at all.”
And why should we ignore the law, the facts and justice itself? Because our enemies have no moral compass.
Here endeth the lesson.
